Barbecues with friends, the building of the swing in the spring, play lessons with children and pets or unwelcome visit of voles and moles – our lawn has it not easy. Not infrequently, at the end of the summer, you notice that your lawn has suffered and has holes. How to quickly and easily close gaps in the lawn is explained below.

What causes can have gaps in the lawn?

  • heavier load than playing turf
  • lack of care
  • Burning by too short lawn cut or over-fertilization
  • pest infestation
  • Appearance of moss and weeds

How can gaps in the lawn be closed?

  • lawn grass seeds
  • grass patch
  • Rasenpads
  • turf
  • swards

Gaps in the lawn can be sewn in a conventional manner . So you put on the affected areas grass seed and wait a bit until the lawn grows and the gap closes gradually. Lawn seeds are preferably spread in the months of March and September. In spring and early autumn enough precipitation falls and there are pleasant temperatures to grow the seed well.

Tip: If you use grass seed in spring, the seed has enough time to develop and grow enough roots.

When seeding, you should resort to appropriate seed. A special reseeding, as you find it here , is designed for this purpose and usually grows faster than conventional grass seed.

Prepare lawn for seeding

The bare spot can be closed better and faster if the substrate is first prepared accordingly. Most of the underground is compacted and should first be loosened up well. If the bare spot has sunken and does not form a straight line with the rest of the lawn, the resulting hole is filled with earth. You can use conventional garden soil or close the gap with potting soil. This has the advantage of not containing weeds , which you can entrap by using garden soil quite unintentionally in the lawn. If there is a gap in the lawn because it is too shady, use special seed mixtures for shade grass, such as available here or are considering giving up completely on this unfavorable spot on turf.

Tip: Remove weeds and leftovers from the old lawn with the help of a verticuler or rake.

If the soil is prepared accordingly, the seed can be distributed. With the help of rake or verticulator, you work the seed into the ground.

Lawn on acid soil?

If there are major gaps in the lawn and you can not explain the cause, then it could be on the ground itself.

Note: on acidic soils moss grows instead of grass.

You should know the pH of the soil before taking any further action. The pH can be determined using simple test kits. These can be purchased for less than ten euros in almost every garden market. If you have a pH below 6, the lawn will not be able to absorb enough nutrients from the soil. Before you close the gaps in the lawn, you should neutralize the acid in the lawn with the help of lawn lime. Observe the quantities stated on the packaging. For larger lawns, a spreader can make your job easier.

Fertilize the lawn – but right

Lawn seeds and fertilizers do not become friends. If the soil is already sufficiently fertilized, the grass seed will probably not form roots and you are waiting in vain for the gap to close in the lawn. Some manufacturers of grass seed have come along here and bring out seed mixtures that are enriched with fertilizer that does not start to work until well after planting.

Tip: Do not fertilize the lawn for at least six weeks after you have re-seeded it.

An exception is organic fertilizer , which can already be administered during sowing.

The new lawn also needs sufficient moisture and must not dry out. If the sown grass grows, it should not be entered for about six weeks. Even with the lawnmower, you should practice restraint. Only when the stalks have reached about ten inches in height, the blades of grass are cut to about six inches and trimmed after another six weeks to five inches.

Close larger lawn gaps

Lawn seeds are quickly scattered in a small gap, but what about larger lawns that have become sketchy and unsightly? You should first prepare the soil. For this you raise about five centimeters of soil and mix the soil with sand, compost and humus. If you have secured the soil sufficiently, you can spread the grass seed over a large area. With a board or spade, squeeze the seed well into the ground. Then the seed is to be moistened well.

Lawn paving – better than grass seed?

Grass pavements are an all-round solution and are also suitable for difficult soils. These special mixtures consist of grass seed, fertilizer and a special substrate, which promotes germination even on difficult substrates.

Apply lawn plaster – step by step

  1. Loosen soil
  2. Remove weeds and grass residue
  3. Apply lawn plaster
  4. Water the earth
  5. Always supply the substrate with sufficient moisture

The soil is first loosened up well. This will remove weeds or the remains of dead grass. The turf patch should be applied evenly in all bare areas and in a layer of about three millimeters. In order for the turf to germinate quickly, sufficient watering is required. Gently pour first. If the germinal substrate discolours, it can no longer absorb water and you can stop watering. When the substrate assumes a lighter color, it is a sign that it needs moisture again.

Close gaps in the lawn with a lawn pad

If only minor gaps have been created in your lawn, the handle to the lawn pad is worthwhile. Here you will find the just described components of the turf patch focused on a pad. The pads are simply placed on the spot. This is similar to a seed band practice. Loosen the surface and clean it sufficiently. The pad is pressed lightly, so it can not slip.

Tip: The lawn pad must always be sufficiently hydrated.

If larger gaps have been created, you will not get very far with a lawn pad. The laying of turf is here a welcome alternative. This makes it easy to close larger lawn gaps in a short space of time. Turf can, as the name says, be acquired on wheels. The product is grown in specialized turf schools and sold in rolls of one square meter. Per square meter, you have to expect prices between five and ten euros. Turf is more expensive than lawn seeds, but also very practical. The lawn is slightly misplaced and can be entered within a few hours.

Laying turf – step by step

What is needed?

  • knife
  • lawn peeler
  • shovel
  • wheelbarrow
  • tiller

So that the old lawn can be easily removed, offers a lawn peeler. With a tiller you loosen up the soil sufficiently. In order to be able to cut the turf appropriately, the sharpest possible knife is needed. For the disposal and removal of the old lawn you should have a shovel and wheelbarrow ready.

Tip: Lawn peeler or tillers can be hired in the garden market.

How to proceed:
Begin laying on a straight edge. Select the next bed limit or already set curbs. Unroll the lanes completely and put them on the grass. The individual webs should be close together, but not overlap. If you need more than one lane, you may want to do the staggered laying. This principle is also common when laying laminate.

Tip: Avoid gaps and overlaps when laying turf .

After laying the roller turf, water thoroughly, but make sure that no puddles settle on the lawn. In the first few days, the turf needs increased watering.

You can enter your new lawn on the evening after the installation. Be careful, because only after about one month the lawn is fully loadable. After only ten days, you can mow the turf for the first time .

Close gaps in the lawn with sods – the easy method

Small gaps in the lawn will disappear quickly if you use sods. For this you need an unused piece of grass, which may have gaps. There, you prick your own grasses of the required size and plant them in the previously loosened soil of the resulting grass gap. Pour the new lawn well. After a short time, the turf will have grown well in the lawn and the unwanted gaps are closed quickly and easily.
